An award is a way to recognize the excellence of a person who can boast about making great contribution in any sphere of life. I’m sure everyone, once or twice in their life, has imagined themselves holding an Oscar or a Golden Globe, smiling to the applauding audience and giving a speech full of “It’s a great honor” and “I’m so happy” phrases. At least I have. And it was Leonardo Dicaprio who gave me the golden statuette!
But let’s stick to business. There is a wide range of awards, so people have lots of opportunities to celebrate their achievements. But what about our IT specialists? Can they win their Oscar too? Of course they can. For IT pros impossible is nothing.
I will start from the greatest international award – the Nobel Prize. There are 2 main fields that are central and important for people from IT: Computer Science and Technology. Consequently, people can win a Turing Award for contributions made to the computing community and get $1 million paid by Google. Not a bad compensation for restless nights and spent hours. In return, for $1 million they can a buy 2 Lamborghini Aventadors or an apartment in Dubai with an ocean view or a personal submarine. I would definitely choose an ocean view.
It is also possible to get a Millenium Technology Prize which is the world’s largest technology award for innovations that make our lives better. It is sponsored by Technology Academy Finland and awarded by the President of Finland. For this great achievement you receive 1 million euros (~$1.3 million) and eternal glory among true scientists. Of course, real researchers would invest this hard-earned money into the further exploration but they can also buy a private Pate Island in Ontario, Canada for $1 375 000 (~1 million euros)! Isn’t that amazing?
Moving forward to the awards that concern computers and the Internet it is worth mentioning:
- Prix Ars Electronica awarded in Austria for accomplishments in the field of electronic and interactive art, computer animation, digital culture and music;
- Shorty Awards, annual event acknowledging people and organisations that create topical and consistent short-form content across such social networks as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.;
- Webby award, also called “the Oscars of the Internet”, presented annually for the advancements in the Internet in such categories as websites, interactive advertising, online film and video, and mobile.
Certainly there are much more competitions and awards worldwide that stimulate and motivate curious, inquisitive people to push the boundaries, discover new things and innovate the old ones. But what about Ukraine particularly? Do our IT pros have the opportunity to show their skills, compete and assert themselves?
It appears that there is such event as Ukrainian IT Awards that has existed since 2012 and successfully continues to acknowledge achievements in 6 different categories: Quality Assurance, Project Management, Software Engineering, Software Architecture, Business Analysis and IT education. On this occasion the initiators intend to recognize and give credit to Ukrainian specialists. It is necessary to point out that the panel of judges consists of the SoftServe CEO, the Head of Strategic Global Business Unit and chief Ukrainian public IT figures. That’s the level, don’t you think? And you can easily apply for the participation by filling in the form on the website. Phewww, IT pros can do this in their sleep!
Well, to conclude I want to say that I’ve always wondered how people carry on discovering new “lands”, creating fresh unprecedented things when it seems that everything has already been discovered and created before us. The idea of awards for such great innovations and scientists who take part and win because they invent incredible things amazes me a lot. So, dear members of IT community, it’s all in your hands. Wanna do something great, just go for it!
