Nowadays IT world is an unpredictable part of our everyday life which has brought an incredible number of mind bewildering inventions and immense contributions which not only make it easier to live but also solve global issues, open new horizons and motivate to move forward without looking back.
When you think over the greatness of these things you begin to realise that everything has been done with the help of brilliant minds and skillful hands of people that surround us. But when you read about another IT product that you use everyday and bump into the information that it has been developed by your fellow countryman, well, you feel one hell of a pride! Way to go, brother! You see him? I come from the same country! He’s my countryman!
That’s pretty much the reaction I have when I get to know such things :) So, when I researched for my last article and found out this info I decided to look into it and found out lots of causes to be proud that I share the same origin with these great people I am going to talk about.
So, the first developer with Ukrainian origin I’ve came across is Jan Koum who was born in Fastiv, outside Kiev and moved to California when he was 16. He is famous for creating WhatsApp, the most globally popular messaging app with more than 700 million active users. These are really impressive numbers and I believe that each of you uses this application everyday to exchange messages, send photos or videos. Interesting that in 2007 Jan Koum tried to apply for a job at Facebook but failed. And in 2014 this very company bought WhatsApp for $19 billion. I believe that’s what they call “to knock flat on one’s butt”.
The next discovery I’ve made for myself is a video game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developed by a Ukrainian team that works for GSC Game World based in Kiev. After the release in 2008 there were 2 million copies sold worldwide and these numbers speak for themselves. It got positive reviews about its design of the Zone and the title of being pretty scary. I suppose it really gave a way to draw a new picture of Ukrainian “Zone” with zombified stalkers running around.
Who Developed PayPal
And another person who is a Ukrainian-born computer scientist and internet entrepreneur is Max Levchin who moved to the USA at the age of 16 (as Jan Koum did). He is known for developing PayPal, one the world’s largest internet payment companies which is now owned by eBay. I bet everybody ordered something from eBay, and all of this is possible thanks to this guy who is now a Corporate Director at Yahoo! and a chairman of the Board of Directors at Yelp. And a billionaire.
Well, I’m sure that is not the end of the list of talented IT pros with Ukrainian origin and I’m positive that I’ll write about them more. They reached the top but are not going to stop because such people can’t stand still on one place, they generate ideas, create new startups and develop new projects because only this really makes sense. Only movement. Only forward.
