Ukrainian Women-In-Tech

Ukrainian IT market is no longer a place for men only, the industry is booming with ladies. Intelligent and ambitious, they overcome barriers built by social expectations and conquer new technical challenges. Throughout Ukraine’s long history, women’s career choices were limited due to gender stereotypes. Nevertheless, present-day statistics look very promising: out of 7,413 technical specialists, who filled the DOU.ua developers salaries survey* in December 2019, 13.64% were females. The Big Survey of 2023 underscores the persisting disparities in the tech industry, with female software engineers reporting higher rates of bias and discrimination compared to their male counterparts, demonstrating an urgent need to address these systemic issues. Let’s take a closer look on what it’s like to be a ‘lady in tech’.

What Ukrainian Women-In-Tech Actually Do

We all know the most common stereotypes about what it means to be a ‘woman who code’. But how close are we to the real portrait?

Well, if you were to meet an average Ukrainian lady working in IT, she should be the age between 25 – 29 and most likely, working for an outsourcing company. Based on the DOU.ua survey run in December 2019, we had a chance to see some actual figures of women in IT, which pushed us to the following insights:

  • Half of the women are QA Engineers. Ultimately, it shows that QA remains the launchpad to a career in the IT field.
  • 44% are Software Engineers. In terms of Seniority, exactly half of all ladies-developers are considered to be Middle level, having 2 to 5 years of experience.
  • Roughly 5% are Technical Leads of different teams. To all skeptics out there, prepare to be surprised: since 2015 Tech Lead at Grammarly is a woman. It again proves that females have an advance in delivering end-to-end products.
  • Less than one percent are DevOps Engineers. As in all of the high technology, women in DevOps are still a tiny minority.

Top 5 Programming Languages Chosen by Ukrainian Women-in-Tech

The most common programming languages female coders have proficiency in are JavaScript, C#/.NET, Java, PHP and Python:

  • JavaScript – 33.92%
  • C#/.NET – 20%
  • Java – 10.89%
  • PHP – 10.13%
  • Python – 4.56%

More than one third of respondents claim that they are skilled in JavaScript, making Ukrainian front-end web development a hotspot for staff augmentation. 3.80% of females create iOS apps using Swift, 2.78% code in C++, equally per 2.53% of females give preference to Kotlin and Ruby on Rails. A small number of women also work with C (1.01%) and Golang (1.01%), while the least popular are Clojure (0.25%) and Delphi (0.25%).

Females in Ukrainian IT: the Growing Share

According to the survey, we see a growing share of female engineers, reflecting the market share of Women-in-Tech to the whole Tech Community: since 2013 it has grown at almost five percent by the end of 2019.

A similar tendency is observed at Mobilunity. Having 32% of women working in our office, we are confident that the success of the Ukrainian IT industry would be absolutely impossible without the amazing ladies:

“In Mobilunity, we are still far from equal gender representation on all roles and levels. Historically, Ukrainian engineering profession was a masculine choice in a vast majority of cases. So we have a heritage in a country that we got to live with. Still, 32% of our whole staff is feminine. Company’s top management, D- and C-levels, is 62% taken by ladies, and we are very proud of this number and results we all together are able to deliver.”

Cyril Samovskiy, Mobilunity CEO

All that being said, Mobilunity is proud to be a part of the global and, in Ukraine in particular, trend of the increasing share of females in the tech industry.

*Conclusions are drawn based on the survey of 10,186 respondents in total run by the DOU portal in December 2019
