Odoo Migration to the Latest Odoo Version

Odoo has taken the world of enterprise management planning by storm. As the new OpenERP, Odoo delivers a comprehensive suite of business solutions that help increase productivity and improve daily business practices. Odoo sprouted from the dream of Fabien Pinckaers to become the leader of the enterprise management market through a fully open source software. From this dream emerged a phenomenon that continues to bring quality solutions for businesses of all types and sizes.

Odoo is a suite of business applications that are easy to use and all the demands of a growing business. With thirty main applications, updated regularly, Odoo delivers more than 4,500 apps to cover a wide variety of business needs. Odoo is now the most widely installed business software in the world and there is a huge amount of Odoo developers. It is used by three million users worldwide. As more businesses shift to Odoo, and new versions continue to emerge, migration has become the popular topic of discussion. So, what do you need to know for Odoo migration?

Developers Improve Odoo to Release New Versions

As OpenERP improved and moved beyond ERP, new enterprise management planning systems began to emerge through Odoo. One of the benefits of open source software is that developers can constantly improve software. As developers offer their unique expertise and experience, new versions of the software emerge. Currently working on Odoo 11, it’s interesting to watch the new features offered with each Odoo setup.

In his quest to become the leader in the OpenERP world, Pinckaers began his journey in 2005 with TinyERP. From 2005 to 2006, four versions of TinyERP were created. But, it was quickly realized that one of the biggest issues with TinyERP was the name itself. How could Pinckaers stand in front of potential customers and offer the biggest improvements with a name that starts with “tiny”? After much consideration and some brainstorming, TinyERP developed into OpenERP in 2009. By the start of 2011, OpenERP 6.0 was the first version based on AGPL.

For version 8, OpenERP was renamed to Odoo because its reach went beyond ERP. Odoo 8 improvements included usability and productivity, technical improvements, improvements to existing apps and development of new apps, and the entrance of a website build and CMS. Odoo 8 was faster and easier to use. The new apps included point of sales with full hardware support, marketing apps, and a new WMS and CMS. On the frontend of every app, Odoo 8 offered online job offers, event booking, quotation builder, and electronic signature, among other features.

In 2015, Odoo 9 was released. Odoo 9 was faster, easier to navigate, and now fully mobile. The CRM delivered better on-boarding through a new dashboard. There was also a new dashboard in the sales area. The improvement featured a full overview of user activity, and a list of next actions and performances. Odoo 9 database management helped deliver reporting, revenue recognition, recurring invoices, and customer portals. Accounting, contracting, and signing also improved. eCommerce usability was added along with a new website editor.

In Odoo 10, some applications were completely redeveloped while others focused on minor improvements to increase efficiency and productivity. The website developer was completely redeveloped to offer a new version with optimized usability and better performance. Odoo eCommerce improved to include the integration of Google Analytics and delivery tracking. A brand-new application, Odoo Studio, made creating or customizing applications possible to non-technical users. Another new application, Odoo Helpdesk was created to help businesses manage customer service and support tasks. Odoo 10 also moved to a new API to optimize performance.

The Newest OpenERP Odoo Deployment

Odoo 11 is the most current version of Odoo available. Since it is recommended that businesses regularly migrate to the newest version of Odoo, many businesses have moved to Odoo 11. New applications in Odoo 11 include online appointment scheduling, marketing automation, a new iOS app, in-app purchases, salary configuration, and Odoo.sh. Improvements made to other features of Odoo 11 were made to increase performance, usability, and speed. The goal of Odoo ERP implementation is to continually provide businesses with new ways to manage their company to improve productivity and increase revenue.

OpenERP to Odoo Migration

OpenERP Odoo migration is made simple for seamless integration. Odoo will migrate any version of OpenERP to the latest release if it is a supported version of Odoo. To determine whether a version of Odoo is supported, the rules are that supported versions include the latest release plus the last two version before release. For example, Odoo will migrate data from OpenERP to Odoo 9 because the latest version is Odoo 11 which is preceded by Odoo 10 and Odoo 9. One of the requirements for migration is an Odoo manage database. Migration will not be possible if you do not dump your database to Odoo. This can be done manually or through a migration service.

In addition to dumping your database to Odoo, it is important to make sure you have a secure connection, so the installation does not become corrupted. For code migration, you should be aware of all changelogs and maintain changes in your customized module. Community editions of Odoo share the open source benefits of free software. For migration, you simply enter the code that is specific to the modules you want to add to your custom software. An example code for migration would be:

find . -type f -name '*.py' | xargs sed -i 's/from openerp/from odoo/g'

Odoo is the most popular platform available for enterprise management. Through continued improvements and easy migration, Odoo deployment is seen in businesses of all types. From TinyERP to Odoo 11 in only twelve years, it’s no wonder 3 million users turn to Odoo for the latest in OpenERP. With the fully open source software, Odoo migration to the latest version of Odoo is easy to configure and seamless. There’s no telling where the dream of Fabien Pinckaers will journey to next, but chances are it’ll make businesses around the world even more effective and productive than they are because of Odoo today.
